One of the first newly graduated Ugandan doctors to arrive at Lacor Hospital to complete his residency, Dr CP specialized in radiology at the University of Milan on a scholarship from the Italian government’s cooperation program, before joining the radiology department at Lacor in 1994. He was one of the very first radiology specialists in all of northern Uganda.
He lived through the years of civil war, the rebels’ raids on the hospital, the wounded, the shootings, and the 2000 Ebola outbreak. It was he who alerted Dr. Matthew Lukwiya, then medical director, who was training in Kampala, concerned about several suspicious deaths that suggested a new and terrible disease. It was to him that Dr. Matthew entrusted his last wishes shortly before succumbing to Ebola.
In 2008, the hospital’s Board of Directors appointed Dr. CP as the hospital’s CEO.
A discreet, cultured, and exceptionally kind physician, he was deeply respected. Every day, he was the one who closed the radiology department, leaving only after seeing the last patient. His passing leaves behind an huge void, but also an invaluable legacy.
In one of his most recent interviews, his message remains clear:
"We must acknowledge that changes are happening, whether we like it or not—and they are here to stay. The greatest challenge is to reconcile them with Lacor’s mission. From the very beginning, our mission has always been to provide quality care accessible to the poor and the most vulnerable. But the context in which we live means that costs are constantly rising. Inflation, new technologies, and the need for more staff to meet the population’s growing needs all represent a considerable economic challenge. Finding a balance between accessibility and sustainability is our primary task and the major challenge we leave to the next generation of leaders.
How can we achieve this? We cannot give what we do not have, but we can set an example: live simply, share what little we have, and use it efficiently in the service of the hospital’s mission."
I support local talent development
"If competence and probity were personified, it would be Dr. CP. After the passing of the Corti couple and of Dr. Matthew Lukwiya, he stood as straight as a pilar for Lacor Hospital to continue to excel. May his soul rest in peace!"
