The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada announced on May 4 that a surgeon from Ottawa won the 2026 Teasdale-Corti Humanitarian Award.
Dr. Yvonne Ying, M.D., FRCSC, MSE, M. Éd, M. Sc. (Global Surgery), pediatric plastic surgeon at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario and professor at the University of Ottawa, wins this prestigious award.
Dr. Ying's career connects academic surgery with humanitarian work, global health education and advocacy for marginalized patients. Her work spans operating rooms in Ottawa, rural hospitals in East Africa and field hospitals in conflict zones — all guided by a simple goal: to bring surgical care to communities where it is hardest to access.
A detailed description of her work is found on the College's web site, in the article : Expanding the reach of surgical care.
The list of all recipients since the inception of the award can be found here.
