The committee marathon

An intesive series of committee meetings leading up to the mid-year Board of Directors meeting is now beginning.

These include the Board Quality Committee, which I have the pleasure and responsibility of chairing, followed by the Finance and Audit Committee and then the Human Resources Committee, pictured below.

We now hold our meetings in the house that once belonged to the Comboni Missionary Sisters, who founded the hospital in 1959. From the walls, photographs of the founders, as well as of Mum and Dad, look down on us.

Yesterday morning, before the Finance Committee meeting, I attended the launch of training on the new clinical software in the paediatric outpatient department.

Sister Mary Kitale, from the Nursing Directorate—as indicated by her “black belt”—and Dr. Emmanuel Ochola, Scientific Director and head of the health software implementation project, introduced the contract company’s IT specialists who will be training the staff.

Although living conditions are improving here, at least in and around Gulu, the main city in northern Uganda, most of the population remains extremely poor. Paying for healthcare is often an unaffordable luxury unless the cost of that care is sufficiently subsidized.
